80th Earth Classroom Field Seminar in Nagoya | Nagoya University Museum

The 80th Earth Classroom Field Seminar, co-hosted by Nagoya City Science Museum and Nagoya University Museum, will take place on July 25-26, 2026, exploring cosmetic raw materials from volcanoes.

The “80th Earth Classroom – Field Seminar –” will be held from July 25 (Sat) to July 26 (Sun), 2026, co-organized by the Nagoya City Science Museum, located in Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya, and the Nagoya University Museum. This two-day program, themed “Discovery! Cosmetics Made by Volcanoes,” aims to unravel the mystery of sericite, a cosmetic raw material produced by volcanoes. Participants will explore through experiments and field observations why sericite is used in cosmetics, how it is formed from volcanoes, and where it can be found.

Event Content and Highlights

This field seminar focuses on the unexpected connection between geological resources from volcanic activity and our daily lives. On the first day, participants will learn about the properties of sericite through experiments at the Nagoya University Museum. On the second day, they will visit an actual sericite mine in Toei-cho, Kitashitara-gun, Aichi Prefecture, to experience its formation site firsthand. This combined theoretical and practical approach offers participants an opportunity to deeply understand the fascination of earth science and the immense natural power behind everyday products.
