Love Letters ~SENDAI PARCO2 10th Anniversary Special~ in Sendai

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of SENDAI PARCO2, the special performance "Love Letters SENDAI PARCO2 10th Anniversary Special" will be held on August 23, 2026, at Denryoku Hall. This one-night-only event features Yudai Chiba, a Sendai native who has recently starred in many popular productions, and Sairi Ito, acclaimed for her leading role in the NHK serial TV novel "Tora ni Tsubasa." They will bring the world of "Love Letters" to life.

The Enduring Masterpiece "Love Letters"

Born in New York in 1989, "Love Letters" is a seminal reading drama where two actors read letters, revealing the lives of a man and a woman. Since its premiere in Japan in 1990, it has been staged repeatedly by PARCO Produce, with over 530 cast pairings having contributed to its history. The current production, directed by Shuntaro Fujita since 2017, upholds the spirit of the original translator and director Yoji Aoi, creating a contemporary rendition of "Love Letters." The charm of this play lies in how each performance offers a unique experience, with the same script taking on entirely different expressions depending on the actors' generations, personalities, and life experiences.

Story: A 50-Year Correspondence

The story follows childhood friends Andy and Melissa. Melissa is free-spirited and impulsive, while Andy is serious and always writing. As they enter adolescence, they begin to acknowledge each other as the opposite sex, but on the cusp of a decisive moment, they realize they cannot be more than friends. After college, they marry and pursue separate paths: Andy enters the legal profession after serving in the Navy, eventually becoming a senator, while Melissa pursues a career in art but experiences emotional breakdown. Their story unfolds over 50 years through their letters, bridging the time they spent apart.
