The "Baby Crying Sumo Tournament" will be held at Matsuzakaya Nagoya store in Sakae, Nagoya on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
This traditional event aims to pray for the healthy growth of babies, and will be officiated by representatives from the "Oanago Shrine Crying Sumo" of Tochigi Prefecture, a nationally selected intangible folk cultural asset. It's a unique event where babies compete to cry first while held high in the sumo ring.
A handprint art workshop will also be held concurrently as a commemorative keepsake. The venue is equipped with a kids' space, changing facilities, and nursing rooms, making it comfortable for families with young children. This is a popular event that has continued for over 40 years.
