Summer Vacation Research Fest: Learn About Antarctic Observation Support - Miraikan
Miraikan in Odaiba, Tokyo, hosts the 'Summer Vacation Research Fest' on Aug 22, 2026. A free event for elementary students to learn about Antarctic observation jobs through talks and workshops.
The "Summer Vacation Research Fest Learn About Antarctic Observation Support" will be held at The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Odaiba, Tokyo, on Saturday, August 22, 2026. This event, a special program related to the ongoing exhibition "The Great Antarctic Exhibition," is perfect for summer vacation research projects. Professionals from companies supporting Antarctic observation and individuals with experience in Antarctic research expeditions will share insights into the "jobs in Antarctica" through engaging talks and workshops.
Talks on "Jobs in Antarctica"
The event features several talk sessions focusing on the technologies that support life and research in Antarctica. The "Talk on Satellite Communications at Syowa Station" will explain how researchers stay connected to Japan, detailing the internet environment and the satellite communication systems. Another session, "Talk on Water at Syowa Station," will demystify how water is secured and utilized in the icy Antarctic environment, using relatable examples. Additionally, the "Talk on Buildings at Syowa Station" will explore the secrets behind comfortable living in Antarctic buildings, which must withstand temperatures below -40°C, through experiments and hands-on activities. The "Talk on Electricity at Syowa Station" will reveal the behind-the-scenes efforts to generate and maintain electricity in the harsh polar conditions, sharing real-life episodes from the field.
These talks are primarily aimed at elementary school students, with guardians also welcome to attend. Each session has a limited capacity.
Workshop Activities
In addition to the talk sessions, a workshop titled "Building an Antarctic Base Together!" is planned, allowing participants to engage in hands-on activities. Specific details about the workshop can be found on the official website.
