The "Antarctic Summer School" will be held at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Koto-ku, Tokyo, offering special classes for elementary school students. This event, linked to the "Great Antarctic Exhibition," features former Antarctic expedition members sharing their experiences about the continent's nature and research activities. It's a unique opportunity for children to learn about and engage with the wonders of Antarctica in an enjoyable way.
Event Overview and Content
Over two days, students from the 5th and 6th grades will participate in special lessons covering various subjects such as science, Japanese language, integrated studies, programming, art, and social studies. These sessions aim to deepen their understanding of Antarctica. A highlight on DAY 1 is a live connection with the 67th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition wintering party during the integrated studies session, providing a real-time glimpse of life in Antarctica.
The instructors are all individuals who have participated in Antarctic expeditions. Ms. Hideko Nagai (51st Expedition) will teach science, Mr. Tomoya Suwazono (67th Expedition) will cover Japanese language, Mr. Noriyuki Takeyoshi (63rd Expedition) will lead programming, Mr. Shunsuke Komatsu (64th Expedition) will teach art, and Ms. Norika Nagaura (66th Expedition) will cover social studies. Each will share unique stories and insights from their time in Antarctica.
