HEP Sandals Exhibition at Shibuya Hikarie: Tradition and Innovation from Nara
Exhibition on Nara's traditional HEP sandals at Shibuya Hikarie. July 2 - Aug 30, 2026. Free admission.
The "Mononoomawari of the Footwear Industry: Nara Kawato Footwear Store's HEP Sandals" exhibition is being held at Shibuya Hikarie, shedding light on the history and innovation of the footwear industry rooted in Nara Prefecture. This event focuses on the traditional Japanese footwear culture, particularly the "HEP sandals" cultivated in Yamato Takada City, Nara Prefecture, exploring their charm and new possibilities in the modern era.
Roots and Evolution of HEP Sandals
Hep sandals have their roots in the "tsukke sandals" (slip-on sandals) that were once widely popular in Japanese households. Their design is inspired by the mules worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Roman Holiday." They were developed to fit the Japanese lifestyle of frequently changing shoes, growing through a division of labor system where the entire region cooperatively produced a single product. This exhibition introduces a diverse range of HEP sandals from Kawato Footwear Store, including the classic "Driving" model and the new "Sabrina Horsebit." Additionally, unique, one-of-a-kind sandals will be displayed, allowing visitors to try on sandals redesigned for modern lifestyles and find their perfect pair.
