To commemorate its 100th anniversary, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will host "Hyakka Ryoran: Edo Paintings Across the Sea," an exhibition showcasing the British Museum's significant collection of Japanese art.

This exhibition features a curated selection of Edo period paintings and Ukiyo-e prints from the British Museum, renowned for having one of the most comprehensive Japanese art collections outside Japan. Focusing on works by prominent Ukiyo-e artists such as Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige, the exhibition traces the history of international cultural exchange that flourished since the Japonisme movement in the late 19th century.

It sheds light on the collection's formation and research, highlighting the British Museum's role in the preservation and study of Japanese art. This presents an opportunity to foster a new dialogue between masterpieces of Japanese art and contemporary audiences.

A commemorative lecture by Rosina Buckland, Head of the Department of Japan and Korea at the British Museum, titled "The British Museum's Japanese Collection," will be held on the opening day, July 25, 2026.
